Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating

One burner stays cold. You turn the knob, the light comes on, and nothing happens. Or the coil glows for a minute, then quits. Meanwhile dinner is half-made and the other burners are crowded. An electric cooktop element that won't heat usually points to one of a few specific parts. Here's how we trace it, and what you can safely check first.

What a dead element is actually telling you

Electric elements are simple. Power comes in, resistance wire heats up, a switch or control decides how long it stays on. When one burner is dead and the rest work, the problem is almost always local to that burner. When several burners are dead at once, we start looking at the power feed to the whole cooktop instead. On a smooth top, a burner that clicks on and off but never gets hot is a different story than one that never lights at all. Note which it is. That detail narrows the search fast and saves us time on site.

Cause one: a bad connection at the element

On coil-style cooktops, the element plugs into a receptacle under the drip pan. Spills, boil-overs, and years of heat cycling burn those contacts. The prongs pit, the socket loosens, and the burner heats poorly or not at all. You'll sometimes see a dark scorch mark on the socket. This is the cheapest failure of the group and the most common one we find on older coil ranges. Fix is a new element, a new receptacle, or both. It's also why a burner may work if you wiggle it — that intermittent behavior is a strong clue, not a fluke.

Cause two: the element itself, or the switch behind the knob

Elements fail open. The wire inside breaks and current stops. On coils you may spot a blister, split, or bright pitted spot. On radiant smooth tops the element sits under the glass and looks fine even when it's dead. Next up is the infinite switch — the part behind the knob that cycles power. When a burner runs full blast with no control, or stays cold on every setting, that switch is a prime suspect. Both parts are testable with a meter. Both are routine replacements. Which one it is depends on what the readings say, not on guessing.

Cause three: control board, wiring, or the power feed

Touch-control smooth tops route everything through a control board. A dead zone with live buttons elsewhere can mean a failed relay on that board. Heat and humidity in Atlanta crawl spaces and older kitchens don't help the wiring behind the appliance either. If two burners quit at the same moment, check your panel — an electric cooktop runs on 240 volts through a double breaker, and losing one leg kills half the unit while the rest still works. That single symptom fools a lot of people into thinking the cooktop died. Sometimes it's just the breaker.

Safe checks you can do right now

Turn the cooktop off and let it cool completely. On coil units, unplug the suspect element and inspect the prongs and socket for burn marks, then reseat it firmly. Swap that element with a working one from another burner of the same size — if the fault follows the element, you have your answer. Look at your breaker panel and reset the double breaker fully off, then on. Wipe spills out of drip pans. Do not remove the cooktop, lift the glass, or open any panel to reach wiring. A meter tells us whether an element has continuity, whether the switch passes voltage on each setting, and whether both legs of the 240-volt feed are present at the terminal block. Can I keep using the other burners?

Usually yes, if the rest heat normally and nothing smells burnt or smokes. Stop using the cooktop entirely if you see sparking, scorching around a burner, or a cracked glass surface, and shut off the breaker.

Why does my burner work sometimes and not others?

Intermittent heat almost always points to a loose or corroded connection, most often at the plug-in receptacle on a coil unit. It can also be a failing infinite switch cycling erratically. Both are repairable.

Is a cracked glass smooth top still safe?

No. A crack lets spills reach live wiring under the glass and can spread with heat. Turn the cooktop off at the breaker and schedule service. The glass surface is replaceable on most models.
