What happens when nobody touches the filter
Food bits, grease, and label paper collect in the filter basket. At first the pump pushes water through anyway. Then the mesh loads up, flow drops, and dirty water gets recirculated onto clean dishes. That's the film on your glass and the grit in the cup bottoms. Grease coats the tub and the door gasket, and the smell sets in. Later that debris works its way toward the drain pump and check valve, and now you have standing water, a drain error, and a service call instead of a two-minute rinse. Our humid summers speed up the odor part, because a warm damp tub full of food residue is a science experiment.
The habit that prevents all of it
Open the door and look at the floor of the tub. Most models have a round cylinder filter you twist counterclockwise and lift out, with a flat mesh screen underneath. Take them to the sink and rinse under hot water. An old toothbrush and a drop of dish soap works on the mesh. Scrape any hard grit off the flat screen, drop both back in, and twist the cylinder until it seats and stops. That's it. While you're down there, wipe the bottom of the door and the rubber gasket with a damp cloth. If the parts don't want to come loose, check the manual for your exact filter layout. Never force them.
How often, honestly
Once a month covers a typical household. Every two weeks if you run it daily, cook a lot, or skip rinsing plates. Big families and anyone who feeds a crowd on Sundays should make it a weekly chore. If you pre-rinse everything and run two loads a week, every six weeks is fine. Set a phone reminder and tie it to something you already do, like changing the HVAC filter. Once a month, run the machine empty on the hottest cycle. Hot water keeps grease from hardening in the drain hose and pump housing.
Signs prevention is already too late
Water sitting in the well hours after a cycle means the drain path is restricted. A drain error code that keeps coming back, or a machine that quits mid-cycle with a full tub, points the same direction. Listen for a hum with no water moving, or a grinding rattle right as the drain starts. Other red flags: dishes coming out dirtier than they went in, a sour smell that's back a day after you cleaned, detergent caked in the dispenser cup. At that point cleaning the filter helps but rarely fixes it. Something downstream is clogged or worn. Call us and we'll take a look.
Safe checks you can do before you call
Pull and rinse the filter, then run a short cycle and watch the drain. Make sure the sink's garbage disposal is empty and run it, since dishwashers usually drain through it. If a new disposal went in recently, confirm somebody knocked the drain plug out. Look under the sink for a kinked drain hose. Feel the water at the kitchen tap; if it never gets hot, the dishwasher isn't getting hot water either. Stop there. Don't pull the lower access panel, don't drag the machine out, and leave the pump alone. Those steps involve wiring and water lines. That part is ours.

Can I put the filter in the dishwasher to clean it?
No. It needs hand scrubbing under hot water with a soft brush. Running it in place just recirculates the same debris. Skip wire brushes and bleach; they damage the mesh.
