Loading and detergent: the free fixes
Start here, because it costs nothing. Overloading is the most common cause we find. Dishes that overlap block spray. Tall pots on the bottom rack stop the upper arm from turning. Spin both arms by hand — they should move freely and not hit anything. Next, check the detergent. Old powder or pods that sat in a humid cabinet clump and don't dissolve. Buy fresh and store them dry. Add rinse aid; it helps with spotting and drying. Also run the hot tap at your kitchen sink for a minute before starting a cycle, so the machine pulls hot water from the start instead of cold.
Clogged filter, spray holes, and drain
Nearly every modern dishwasher has a removable cylinder filter in the floor of the tub. Twist and lift it out. Rinse it under the faucet with a soft brush. Wipe the flat screen underneath. You'll often find broken glass, seeds, or a wad of paper label. While you're in there, look at the spray arm holes. Many pop off with a quarter turn or a hand-tightened nut. Poke clogged holes with a toothpick and rinse the arm out. If water sits in the bottom after a cycle, the drain path is restricted, and that dirty water gets sprayed right back onto your dishes.
