Chest and Upright Freezers
Your freezer is sweating on the outside, the ice cream is soft, and a garage full of meat is on the line. You want one straight answer: fix it or replace it? We get that call all summer in Atlanta, usually after a humid week. Here is how we sort fixable faults from the ones that end a freezer's life.

Age matters, but not as much as you think
A freezer is a simple machine. Compressor, condenser coil, fan, thermostat, door seal. Many units run well past ten years with basic care. So age alone does not decide anything. What we look at is how the unit was treated. Was it in a hot garage with the coil packed in pollen and dryer lint? Did it sit in standing water? Was the door left ajar for days? Those things shorten life faster than the calendar does. A ten-year-old chest freezer in a dry basement is often worth fixing. A five-year-old unit that flooded may not be.
The fault type tells the story
Some problems are routine. A bad door gasket, a stuck defrost timer, a failed evaporator fan, a dirty condenser coil, a faulty thermostat, a clogged drain in a frost-free upright. Those are normal repairs and the freezer usually goes right back to holding temperature. Other faults are structural. A refrigerant leak inside the foam walls of a chest freezer cannot be reached without tearing the cabinet apart. A cracked liner, rusted-through floor, or seized compressor in a low-cost unit lands in the same bucket. When the sealed system fails on an older freezer, the math usually points to replacement.
Can we get the part
Parts availability quietly decides a lot of these calls. Common thermostats, fans, gaskets, and control boards for major brands are generally easy to source. Older or discontinued models are hit and miss, especially proprietary electronic boards and molded door liners. If a part is backordered for weeks, you are running a cooler in the meantime, and that changes the answer. We check the model and serial tag before promising anything. Snap a photo of that tag when you call us so we can look while you are still on the line. Knowing the model early saves a wasted trip.
What we actually do on the visit
We start with what you noticed. Running nonstop? Warm but the light works? Frost building on one wall? Then we take temperatures, listen to the compressor, test the fan and thermostat, check the door seal with a simple paper pull, and look at the condenser coil. Atlanta garages coat coils in pollen and dust, and a choked coil mimics a dying compressor. Once we know the fault, we tell you plainly whether it is a parts repair, a maintenance fix, or the end of the road. If replacement is the honest call, we say so.
When replacement is the better move
A few clear cases. Sealed-system refrigerant leaks in a foam-walled chest freezer. A cabinet with rust holes or a cracked interior liner, since insulation soaks up moisture and never dries. A small, inexpensive unit needing a compressor. Any freezer that has been submerged. Also consider stacked faults: a failing fan plus a torn gasket plus a weak compressor on the same old unit is three repairs waiting in line. Newer freezers pull less power and hold temperature more steadily, which matters if the unit sits in an unconditioned space through a Georgia summer.

Chest and Upright Freezers — quick answers
My chest freezer runs constantly but stays cold. Is that bad?
Often it is a dirty condenser coil, a worn door gasket, or a warm room. Vacuum the coil area and check the seal. If it still never cycles off, have the thermostat and fan tested.
Is frost buildup a repair or normal?
Thin, even frost in a manual-defrost chest freezer is normal and needs periodic defrosting. Heavy frost on one wall, or ice returning within days, usually points to a door seal leak or a defrost fault.
Does a garage freezer wear out faster in Atlanta?
Usually yes. Heat and humidity make the compressor work harder, and pollen clogs the coil each spring. Keeping the coil clean and leaving air space around the cabinet helps a lot.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the machine is doing: the noise, the smell, the error code. Brand and rough age help us load the right parts.
- Step 2
We schedule a window
Metro Atlanta traffic is real, so we book arrival windows that hold up. You get a heads-up before the technician rolls out, and we work around your day where routes allow.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
The technician tests the unit, finds the failed part, and explains what's wrong in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets replaced. Most common parts ride on the van.

Why homeowners call us
- Built for Southern humidityDamp air punishes appliances. Dryers take longer, gaskets grow mildew, ice makers sweat and freeze up. We see these patterns weekly and check for them instead of chasing the obvious part first.
- Pollen-season know-howSpring coats every condenser coil in yellow film. A fridge that struggles in April often just can't shed heat. We clean, test airflow, and tell you what actually failed versus what was choked.
- Six states, one teamGeorgia and the states around it. Same intake, same diagnostic approach, same clear explanation whether you're inside the Perimeter or two hours out. One call reaches the whole service area.
