What a dirty coil actually does to your fridge
Condenser coils dump heat out of the sealed system. When pollen, pet hair, and dust blanket them, that heat has nowhere to go, and the compressor keeps running to hit the temperature you set. Run time climbs from maybe eight hours a day to sixteen or more. Everything downstream takes the stress: the compressor, the start components, the condenser fan motor. Meanwhile the freezer struggles to hold temperature, so the defrost cycle works harder and frost builds where it should not. None of this happens overnight. It happens quietly over two or three Georgia summers, until the food in the fresh food section starts spoiling early.
The five-minute habit
Unplug the refrigerator or shut off its breaker first. Pull the unit forward if you can, or find the vented grille at the bottom front. Remove the toe grille. It usually snaps or slides off by hand, no tools and no panels. Vacuum with a brush attachment and a narrow crevice tool. Get the coils, the fan area, and the floor underneath. A long flexible coil brush from a hardware store reaches the back rows. Do not spray water. Do not poke at wiring, the compressor, or anything with a warning label. Put the grille back, plug in, slide it home.
How often, and why Atlanta changes the answer
Twice a year works for most kitchens. Once in late spring after pollen season dumps yellow film on everything, and once in fall. If you have shedding dogs or cats, make it every three months, because pet hair mats onto coils faster than dust does. Same if the fridge sits on carpet or in a tight alcove with poor airflow. While you are back there, check that the unit has a few inches of clearance from the wall. Humidity is the other factor. Damp air makes dust cling instead of blowing off, so our coils stay dirtier than the same fridge in a dry climate.
Signs cleaning will not fix it anymore
Some symptoms mean the damage is already done. The compressor is hot to the touch and the fridge never seems to shut off. You hear a click, then a hum, then a click again every few minutes, which is a compressor trying to start and failing. Maybe the fresh food section is warm while the freezer is still cold, or water is pooling under the crisper drawers. A burning or hot-plastic smell near the back counts too, and so does ice building up on the back wall of the freezer. At that point you are past prevention and into diagnosis. Unplug it if you smell anything burning, and call us.

Where are the coils on my refrigerator?
Most newer units have them behind the bottom front grille, which pops off by hand. Older models often have a black grid mounted on the back. If you see neither, check the diagram in your owner's manual.
Can I clean coils without moving the fridge?
Usually yes, if yours are bottom-mounted. Pull the toe grille and vacuum from the front with a crevice tool and a coil brush. Back-mounted coils mean sliding the unit out a foot or so.
Does a dirty coil raise my power bill?
It can. A blanketed coil makes the compressor run far longer to reach the same temperature. Longer run time means more electricity for the same cooling, plus extra wear on the parts.
