Do these steps first, in order
1. Unplug the appliance that was running when the breaker tripped. If it's hardwired, leave the breaker off instead. 2. Reset the breaker once. Firmly off, then on. 3. Leave the appliance unplugged and see if the breaker holds for an hour. If it holds, the problem is in the appliance. 4. Note what else shares that circuit. A space heater or shop vac on the same line can push it over. 5. Write down the appliance model number and what it was doing when it tripped, whether it was heating, spinning, or just starting up. That detail tells us a lot before we arrive.
What not to do
Don't keep resetting. Each trip on a fault heats wiring you can't see, so three strikes is enough. Don't tape, wedge, or hold a breaker in the on position. Don't swap in a bigger breaker to "stop the nuisance." The breaker is sized to the wire behind the wall, not to your dryer's mood. Skip extension cords and power strips for anything with a heating element or a motor. Leave the panel cover on, too. That's live metal, and it is not a homeowner check. Same goes for the appliance's back panel, because motors and compressors hold charge.
When to stop and cut power
Some signs mean you're past troubleshooting. Turn the breaker off and step back if you see or smell scorch marks around an outlet, a warm or discolored faceplate, melted plug prongs, a burning-plastic smell, buzzing or crackling from the wall, or sparks when you plug in. If the breaker itself feels hot or won't stay seated, leave it off. If you see smoke or flame anywhere, leave the house and call 911 from outside. Don't go back for the appliance. Smell gas near a dryer or range? Don't touch switches. Get everyone out, then call the gas utility from outside.

Why does it only trip when the dryer heats up?
That timing points to the heating element. Elements crack and touch the housing, which creates a short only when they expand with heat. The same logic applies to dishwasher heaters and oven bake elements.
