Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot

The drum spins. You hear the motor. Forty minutes later the towels come out cold and damp. Nothing burned, nothing sparked, the dryer just quit making heat. In Atlanta humidity that means clothes sit wet and start to smell by morning. Here is what that symptom usually points to, and what you can safely check before we come out.

What "runs but no heat" actually tells us

A dryer has two jobs: turn the drum and heat the air. Those run on separate parts. When the drum still turns, the motor and belt are fine. So the problem sits in the heating circuit or in airflow. That is good news. It narrows things down fast. On an electric dryer, the heating circuit needs both legs of 240-volt power, a working element, and a set of safety switches that all have to agree. On gas, it needs a working igniter, a gas valve, and the same safety switches. One open link anywhere and the drum spins cold.

Cause family one: blocked airflow

Start here, because it is the most common and the cheapest. Lint packs the vent hose and the duct running outside. Heat builds up with nowhere to go. A safety thermostat senses that and shuts the heat off to keep the cabinet from cooking. The drum keeps turning, so it looks like a heat failure. It is really a vent failure. Metro Atlanta homes with long duct runs through crawl spaces or up through two floors clog faster. Add a squashed foil hose behind the machine and you are done heating. Lint traps also glaze over with fabric softener residue and choke air even when they look clean.

Cause family two: burned-out heat parts

If air moves freely and there is still no heat, a part in the heating circuit has opened up. On electric dryers that usually means the heating element, a thermal fuse, or a cycling thermostat. Thermal fuses are one-time devices. They blow after a vent restriction overheats the machine, which is why we always check the duct first. On gas dryers the igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve coils are the usual suspects. All of these sit behind panels or near gas connections. That is our work, not yours. Testing them takes a meter and knowing which reading is normal.

Cause family three: power and controls

Electric dryers pull 240 volts through two breakers. If one leg drops, the drum still spins on 120 volts but the element gets nothing. Classic cold-tumble symptom. A tripped half of a double breaker, a loose cord terminal, or a worn outlet can all do it. Control problems come last: a timer or board that never calls for heat, or a cycle set to Air Fluff or Delicate by accident. We see that more than you would think, especially after kids or guests use the machine. Check the cycle knob before anything else. It costs nothing to rule out.

Safe checks, then what we do

Safe for you: confirm the cycle is not Air Fluff. Clean the lint screen and rinse it in hot water. Pull the dryer out, unplug it, and pull the vent hose off the wall to look for a lint plug. Step outside and confirm the flap opens when the dryer runs. Reset both dryer breakers once. Stop there. Do not open the cabinet, touch gas lines, or bypass a fuse. Bypassing a thermal fuse removes the fire protection. We come with a meter, test each part in the heat circuit for continuity, measure both power legs, check static pressure in the duct, and fix the airflow cause so the new part does not blow again. Call us.

Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot — quick answers

Can I keep using the dryer with no heat?

You can, but stop if you suspect a vent blockage. Trapped lint plus heat is a fire risk. Running long cycles on cold air also wastes power and never fully dries heavy loads in humid weather.

Why did my dryer lose heat right after I cleaned it?

Often a hose got kinked or knocked loose when the machine was moved back. Pull the dryer out and check that the vent hose is round, seated, and not crushed against the wall.

Is a gas or electric dryer harder to fix?

Neither is harder, but the parts differ. Gas involves igniters and valve coils near a live gas line. Electric involves 240-volt elements. Both need testing behind panels, so leave that to a technician.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the machine is doing: the noise, the smell, the error code. Brand and rough age help us load the right parts.

  2. Step 2

    We schedule a window

Metro Atlanta traffic is real, so we book arrival windows that hold up. You get a heads-up before the technician rolls out, and we work around your day where routes allow.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose, then repair

The technician tests the unit, finds the failed part, and explains what's wrong in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets replaced. Most common parts ride on the van.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for Southern humidityDamp air punishes appliances. Dryers take longer, gaskets grow mildew, ice makers sweat and freeze up. We see these patterns weekly and check for them instead of chasing the obvious part first.
  • Pollen-season know-howSpring coats every condenser coil in yellow film. A fridge that struggles in April often just can't shed heat. We clean, test airflow, and tell you what actually failed versus what was choked.
  • Six states, one teamGeorgia and the states around it. Same intake, same diagnostic approach, same clear explanation whether you're inside the Perimeter or two hours out. One call reaches the whole service area.
